    본 사업단은 향후 오년 간 다음과 같은 내용으로 한국학 교육과 연구에 새로운 도약을 모색하고자 한다. 본 사업은 크게 교육, 연구, 그리고 출판의 세가지 영역으로 구성된다. 우선, 교육 영역에서는 본 대학 내의 기존 한국학 교육을 강화하는 한편, 한국의 대학들과 연계하여 국제교육교류를 지원하고 대학원생 컨퍼런스를 개최한다. 한편 본 대학 교수진에 의해 두 가지 연구 프로젝트가 수행될 것이다. 이 연구 프로젝트는 한국학 전공 대학원생과 소장 박사들로 구성되는 연구팀에 의해 진행되는 것으로 이들 차세대학자들의 연구역량을 집중적으로 제고시키는 교육과 훈련의 기회가 될 것이다.

    워싱턴 주립 대학교 (UW)는 그동안 한국학 분야에서 개척적인 역할을 수행하여 왔다. UW 한국학 프로그램은 1944년부터 한국어를 가르치기 시작한 이래 1968년부터 언어, 문학, 역사, 사회과학, 그리고 전문 교육을 포함한, 북미 영어 문화권에 있어서 가장 포괄적인 한국학 프로그램 중의 하나로 확립되었다. 더욱이 한국학 프로그램이 단독으로 모은 기금만도 4백 3십만 달러에 이르러 현재 미국의 어려운 재정여건 상황 하에서도 지속적인 운영을 추진해나가고 있다. 한국학 프로그램이 소속 돼 있는 UW 잭슨 스쿨 (Jackson School of International Studies)은 아시아, 유럽, 라틴 아메리카 지역의 국가들을 전공하는 약 50여명의 교수를 보유한 학제간 사회과학 학과이다. 한국학 프로그램은 또한 1962년 설치된 이래 한국법학에 장기적으로 관심을 기울여 온 아시아 법학 연구소 (Asian Law Center)와도 유기적인 관계를 맺고있다.

    미국 미시간대학교 사업단의 프로젝트 “비교연구를 통한 근 현대 한국의 이해”는 근현대 한국의 다양한 사회적, 문화적, 그리고 정치적 현상을 국가, 시대, 그리고 학제 간의 비교적 관점에서 연구하는 것을 주 목적으로 하고 있다. 미시간대 사업단의 중요한 사업내용으로 국제학술대회 및 심포지엄; 대학원생 장학프로그램; 한국학총서 시리즈 신간 및 연구발간을 위한 전략적 지원; 그리고 첨단연구과제지원 등이 포함되어 있다.

    빙햄튼 대학 (BU)은 미국에서 높이 평가받는 연구 중심 주립 대학 중 한 곳으로 본 대학의 한국학 프로그램은 1994 년 출발 이래 학부 교육의 중요한 분야로 성장해 왔습니다. 8 명의 정규 교수와 1 명의 한국어 강사가 이끌고 있는 BU 의 한국학 프로그램은 다양한 한국어 및 한국 관련 강의를 제공하고 있으며 매년 600 여 명이 넘는 수강생을 확보하고 있습니다. 또한 학문간 통섭 학술 대회 및 국제 학회를 개최하여 미국을 비롯한 해외 한국학 연구자들의 학술 교류에 적극 기여해 왔습니다.

    연구분야에 있어 향후 5년간 시행할 프로젝트는 “한국인의 가치전통,” “한국인의 지혜실천,” “한국인의 감성표현”의 세 주제로 구성되는 “한국학의 기틀 연구: 한국인의 가치, 지혜, 감성”의 기치 아래 추진된다. 한국학의 해외연구의 최대 약점으로 지적되곤 하는 것이 한국학의 피상적, 유행적 연구이다. 본 연구프로젝트에서는 이를 뛰어넘어 한국학의 기본, 한국학의 기틀이 될 수 있는 것이 무엇인가를 가치, 지혜, 감성의 문제를 중심으로 천착하여 학제적 (interdisciplinary) 공동연구를 추진하고자 한다.

    In 2007, the Korea Institute (KI) at Harvard University was selected as an awardee of the AKS Korean Studies Institutional Grant (KSIG) program. The grant, now known as the Overseas Leading University Program for Korean Studies (OLUPKS) and part of the Korean Studies Promotion Service (KSPS), has over the past five years provided stability to Korea Institute core programs and operations, allowed the KI to expand activities, and to introduce new opportunities and resources.

    We feel that we have made substantial achievements in almost all of those six objectives. UCLA faculty gave 31 lectures at 17 universities in 4 Latin American countries, lectures that received high evaluations. We conducted two joint research projects, the first culminating in a conference in 2009 and the second in a conference in 2011. We brought two Latin American international relations scholars to UCLA in 2008 and 2010.

To this end the Center currently supports a Korea Studies colloquia series, a visiting scholars program, student scholarships, international student exchange programs, an outreach program to K-12 educators, Korean language textbook development, and the publication of research on Korea in concert with the University of Washington Press.
