    워싱턴 주립 대학교 (UW)는 그동안 한국학 분야에서 개척적인 역할을 수행하여 왔다. UW 한국학 프로그램은 1944년부터 한국어를 가르치기 시작한 이래 1968년부터 언어, 문학, 역사, 사회과학, 그리고 전문 교육을 포함한, 북미 영어 문화권에 있어서 가장 포괄적인 한국학 프로그램 중의 하나로 확립되었다. 더욱이 한국학 프로그램이 단독으로 모은 기금만도 4백 3십만 달러에 이르러 현재 미국의 어려운 재정여건 상황 하에서도 지속적인 운영을 추진해나가고 있다. 한국학 프로그램이 소속 돼 있는 UW 잭슨 스쿨 (Jackson School of International Studies)은 아시아, 유럽, 라틴 아메리카 지역의 국가들을 전공하는 약 50여명의 교수를 보유한 학제간 사회과학 학과이다. 한국학 프로그램은 또한 1962년 설치된 이래 한국법학에 장기적으로 관심을 기울여 온 아시아 법학 연구소 (Asian Law Center)와도 유기적인 관계를 맺고있다.

    The Center for Korea Studies fosters teaching, research, and outreach related to Korea at the University of Washington and in North America. To this end the Center currently supports a Korea Studies colloquia series, a visiting scholars program, student scholarships, international student exchange programs, an outreach program to K-12 educators, Korean language textbook development, and the publication of research on Korea in concert with the University of Washington Press.
